Extreme environment

An Extreme Environment exhibits harsh and challenging environment conditions of climate and landscape such as extremes of temperature, far outside the boundaries of what a human can comfortably tolerate. For example, Svalbard is far below a comfortable temperature, with lows of -5C in summer and -16C in winter.

An extreme environment is one where humans generally do not live. However, they can choose to explore these places. There are living beings, organisms referred to as extremophiles, that inhabit these spaces.

Humans hope to find resources via exploration of extreme environments. Scientists also hope to use research of extreme environments in order to help understand the environments of the other planets.
